After successful runs in two theaters, the film “Before Your Time” will be showing in theaters throughout Utah.

Yet, it didn’t make the cut with a film festival in one municipality of the state with a population of 3.1 million as of last year, according to U.S. Census estimates.

“Up to Snuff,” the film the Kasey LaRose-led Ogden Film Festival picked, has “rock stars,” “Before Your Time” Director Lucas McGraw told me.

Is the festival, held for a second time, trying to raise their profile?

“Yep,” McGraw replied. “I think that’s exactly it.”

The documentary spotlights W.G. Snuffy Walden, a movie composer. He won an Emmy for the theme music to the famous television show “The West Wing.” The film stars some of Hollywood’s most noble in Aaron Sorkin, Martin Sheen and others.

“There are many factors that our film selection committee has to consider for each film, such as pacing, length, production value, etc.,” LaRose told me. “The main feature chosen this year (‘Up to Snuff’) was unanimously voted to fill the feature film slot alongside the selected short films that screened throughout the night.”

Meanwhile, “Before Your Time” began its statewide run Friday with showings at the Megaplex Theatre in Logan, Utah. Its has played at Kaysville Theatre and another Megaplex cinema in Kaysville and Centerville, Utah, respectively.

McGraw was surprised that the film, which also has a relatively good 7.4/10 score on IMDb, was not selected.

“You’d think that (the festival) would want something local,” he said.

LaRose’s team plans to add more screenings (LaRose didn’t say when). That “will allow for more films to included in the program,” he remarked.

McGraw added “you are dealing with filmmakers” with festival entries.

“Filmmakers will watch and think ‘oh, I could have done it better,’” he said.

McGraw’s group has taught film at elementary schools in Logan in advance of the showings there.

“We hired somebody to go up there,” he said. “We said ‘OK, if you are willing to do it.’”

“We love the film,” McGraw added. “It’s unreal to think that we are where we are and we shortened the movie to make it faster and better.”

Note: the author helped with “Before Your Time.”
